May have turned rack during tie rod remaval
Hi, I'm working on a 1998 V-70 with a SMI steering rack. While trying to remove inner tie rod, the pipe wrench I had holding the rack slipped and the part the tie rod screws into spun. Was using a lot of torque with a Blue Point inner tie rod tool and long breaker bar. I notice the part would screw out more with little resistance (by hand) until a point when it seemed to come unfastened from something inside the unit. It screwed back in place when I turned it the other way. I torqued it back with similar force that loosened it, and the rack seems operational, and car steers OK in road test, So now I have a few of questions;
Is the rack itself in the SMI unit one piece? Or is it possible I loosened an separate inner component?
Did I break some internal centering pin that holds rack in proper position?
How likely is it I did damage to the unit that will show up pretty soon?
I never did get that inner tie rod off, but it was not too bad, the driver's side one was, but it came off with no problems. Would like to know how people get these off, as there is no flat spot to grasp on that side.
Any help with this appreciated. I'm a fair mechanic with decent shop at my disposal, but don't have a lot of experience with Volvos, or frankly, many cars as new as this.
