Hello everyone, I just bought a V70 T5-1999, 260 000 km, in perfect condition... apparently. Its brakes whistled when braking, I filed them, and I took the opportunity to drain the front brakes. No problem. But once I got rolling, I noticed that when braking ... the right REAR brake made a horrible noise, like metal against metal. So I checked the rear brakes pads: nickel. I drained the rear brakes, no problem. The noise was first weakened, then come back even stronger. It is an ABS braking, and I wonder if I did not do something stupid without realizing it, such as an unbalanced braking. Or could my piston be seized? Or anything else you would have done the experiment? Thank you for your answers anyway (and sorry my so bad english)

 

Jack it up and spin the wheel and listen. If the linings on the pads are good, check the backing plate for rubbing. Also check for broken parking brake hardware. Parking brake shoes are under the disc. The linings may have fallen off or the hardware holding the shoes may have corroded to the point of failure.

If your car is NOT AWD, see if that wheel is rubbing. Which mean it will not spin freely. Once off the ground, give it a spin. If it goes around more than 3 times, it is probably not binding.

Second, Volvo's as well as a few other Euro cars are known for NOISY BRAKES. If this is the case, the normal noise, you have a few options.

1. Just before you apply the brakes scream real loud and hold that scream until you come to a complete stop. If you don't like that method try #2.
2. Turn your radio up real loud to drown out the brakes.
3. Another good method is to make sure the pads have their squeel shims, and that those shims as well as the guide pins are either greased with some thick grease or are coated with anti-squeal compound.

That will usually do the trick. ;-)

 

My noise is NOT an euro normal noise ;o), much too high and metallic. Shakes the whole car. Thank's for the advice.
