Default Need to date an engine,..from the serial number.

Hey there, is there any resource that could tell me the date of manufacture of an engine with the serial number and engine type? My car has a replacement engine and I don’t know the year of the engine. Anyone know where to find that? It doesn’t have to be exact,…a range would suffice. I assume they’re sequential.

I was curious so I did some googling and it appears you'd need to know both the VIN and the serial number to get to the build date. You may talk to a dealer but prior posts suggested even the dealer won't know. What you can do to get an approximate date is to use the Volvo Modular Engine WIKI to see which models/years that engine code was found on, then look at a dealer web store for any parts that seem to have an engine serial number break. Not sure why you need to know the build date - since you know the serial number you will be able to find the correct parts from that and the engine code. What year / engine code /serial # are you researching?

Engine type: B5244S
B - petrol
5 - Five cylinder
24 - 2.4 Liter
4 - four valves per cylinder
S - Standard, non turbo

Serial number : 3544743

The car is a 2007. Car fax says engine replaced 58K ago….it says replaced, not rebuilt. Most likely a salvage yard engine.

Yes, it does seem the parts folks will often list a serial number break for certain things, like PCV stuff.
That’s probably good enough to get it into a range. But I’d just like to know,….just because, I guess.

If the Swedes are anything like the Germans,…they have the record somewhere.
I know you can find engine records for Porsche’s that are 65 years old, or older.
But getting to that from Volvo would likely be impossible.

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated.
Maybe someone will chime in with further insight as well.
