Hi there, i'm new to the forum and was wondering if anybody had any idea of how big the problem i've got with my car is. I have a 2002 V70 2.4 automatic which will not go into reverse gear. The auto gear stick will go into reverse and the letter 'R' is on the dash but the car runs as if its in neutral. The forward gears are all ok.

Obviously i'll be taking it to a volvo mechanic soon but because it's just after xmas and I have 4 kids, money is a little tight at the moment to say the least.

I'm hoping that somebody 'in the know' on here is going to tell me that it's only a 50p fuse or something as easy but in reality I have a nasty feeling that this could be a pricey job.

Any comments would be most welcome.

I think the tranny is done. Sorry to say.

 

im having same issue in my 2002 v70 i changed the transmission due to not having reverse but went into every other gear fine i changed transmission thinking reverse went but have the same problem with this transmission Did you ever figure problem out or what did you end up doing to get it to work if that is the case thank you for your time please let me know thanks again

 

well, if its not the transmission then the other parts in play would be the Transmission control unit (aka TCU module) and the shifter. Do the back up lights come on when you move the shifter to R?? (not sure if your model also has a console indicator for the gear selected but if it does, check if that shows R as well).
