Basically my engine is shot and my 98 V70 sportwagon with the 2.4 liter turbo engine needs to be replaced. The car is my work car and I need to get it back on the road asap. I don't mind a less powerful non turbo engine or the more powerful 2.3 turbo or will the regular 2.4 work with my turbo plumbing? What years will fit my car? Thanks to everyone in advance.

 

I've just found a 95 850 turbo wagon with the engine and transmission computers missing, can I use this engine (2.3 liter, unlike my 2.4) and will it work with my turbo plumbing and 2.4 turbo ecu. Someone please answer, I really need the car to get back to work.

 

Maybe someone can help me diagnose if I have a serious problem or not with my engine. Basically what happened is one of the lifters on the fifth cylinder right next to the cylinder started tapping very loudly whenever I was on the throttle but would only tap for a sec when the car in neutral. My mechanic diagnosed it as stuck/floating valve and recommended that we do an oil change with 2 quarts of trans fluid added to clean and unstuck the lifter. We did that and while the engine was warming up he hooked up a water bottle to one of the intake vacuum hoses to clean any carbon build up around the valves and afterwards we went for a test drive.
At this point I should mention that I've been losing minimal antifreeze and adding half a quart every 1000 miles possibly due to worn head gasket. Well in the beginning of the test drive the tapping was there but the mechanic was racing the engine and suddenly the tapping stopped but half a mile later, still racing the engine we've heard a loud whhoossh !!! and car started shaking and blowing antifreeze thorough the exhaust.
Back at the shop car is idling with the hood open and I hit the throttle quickly and saw a burst of white smoke from the head gasket area right by where the turbo sits.
To me it seems like we managed to unstuck the valve that in turn put extra compression on the already weak head gasket and blew it. My mechanic disagrees and says this is more than a head gasket job ($300) and we are better off with a new engine ($600 to $1000 installed)..
What do you think?

 

You just can't plant any old engine in your car. There are too many electronics today that would be incompatable with each other.

It is probably more than a head gasket but consider rebuilding the engine. A used engine is something I NEVER DO and I own a dealership specializing in Volvos.
