Default Problem releasing transmission out of park

Car is a 1998 V70 FWD with 175K miles. The problem seems to be getting worse. When starting the car, I'm unable to move the automatic transmission from park. The shifter is well worn with a crack in the area of the release button on the shifter. I turn the car off and push the lock out button and it seems to be OK.

My daughter is now driving the car and I'm concerned about her getting stuck someplace.

I'm just trying to get an idea of how expensive it will be to fix the problem. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Jim

The micro switch might just be bad. But also check and see if the headlights are not working when it will not come out of park. If they are not working that would be a bad electrical part of the ignition switch.

I hope that it is only that worn shifter, my 98 V70 had same simptom though my shifter looks nice and has no imperfections, however, sometimes it was hard to move shifter into drive, Today the V70 has seen her last day.
no drive at all. but the shifter is moving through all drives, some grinding noise when I put into drive. No reverse and no drive. but what is more facinating is that when I put the car in park, you can still push it and it moves just as in neutral.
I hope yours will not end this way. I scan but there is no code in the scanner.

Check your axles.

Correctly right! I raised the car and looked under the car, one axle pasenger side broken, driver side is still ok, but the boot began to age too, so i bought 2 axles one at hand from Napa and other waiting to be shipped from Ebay.
thanks a million!
