Default Rope Trick

Has anyone used the rope trick successfully with a five cylinder interference engine to fix the crankshaft to pull the dampener? I want to know if I need to spend fifty-bucks for the volvo tool. I've used this method on the red blocks with complete success but I am not sure if I need to be more careful with my v70.

The only added caution is that you will use less rope for the trick. Less piston crown to combustion chamber ceiling distance, so you'll compress faster. Not that it's a huge difference. If your dampener is off, as far as marks, take extra care in determining that you are performing the operation with the valves closed (or about to close). The only time I've ever heard of someone failing with this method was when they cranked the piston up with the rope sitting against an open valve! Rest assured this method wasn't invented for any specific engine. I originally learned it from a Benz mechanic in the 70s. But he learned it from his grandfather!
