Default Temperature sensor (I think)?

I made the mistake of letting my good lady use my 99 V70 and she's broken something
The temperature gauge hardly moved, the car only barely got warm and all because the radiator fan is permanently on even with the ignition switched off and the key removed? I've had to unplug it to stop it.
I'm guessing (from past experience with non Volvo vehicles) that a temperature sensor is goosed. My question is, where abouts is the relevant sensor located? It's dark, cold and raining in the UK at the moment, which is why I'm asking on here and not outside getting my hands dirty.
Of course I could be completely wrong and maybe there's another answer to my problem? Can anybody help.

The sensor is located in the thermostat housing. I would replace the ECT and thermostat at the same time. It is easiest to remove the upper housing to get to the ECT.

Default RE: Temperature sensor (I think)?

Hi Guys,
I'm having the same exact issue on my 99 V70. The temp gauge stays on cold and the electric cooling fan is always on. Is the sensor in the thermostat or are they two separate items? Whereabouts are they located in the engine bay? Lastly...what are these materials going to cost me?

Thanks!!

The ECT is under the thermostat housing. Follow the upper radiator hose to the motor. On the motor where the hose meets it that is the thermostat housing. Once you have the upper section you can see the sensor mounted in the lower half.

Check here for the parts and prices. It is a engine coolant temp sensor and thermostat.

They have an 87 degree and a 92 degree t-stat. Does it matter which one? Also, I couldn't find a coolant temp sensor for a 99. I only found them for up to 98. Will this work: http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exe...ategory_id/198

Thanks!

Thats the one you need.

You can get which ever one you want on the thermostat. The OEM is supposed to be a 90 degree. But either one will work.

Thanks. Is it dangerous to drive the car while in this condition?

Not really just pay attention to the car and how it is acting.

My two cents only. I recommend you go with the higher temp thermostat, I have had the error come back with the lower one but not the higher. I'm not sure why, only a guess, but maybe the computer is more sensitive on the lower end of the spectrum. Anyway, my two cents.

Thanks. The parts place has an OEM replacement that is only a few bucks more. I'll go with that one.

Two more questions:
1. Do I NEED to flush the coolant when replacing the thermostat?
2. Do I NEED to replace the coolant temp sensor as well, or can I just replace the thermostat and see if that fixes the issue?

Thanks again!

I would replace the sensor as well. They both are pretty common to go bad. I would hate to say no and 2 days later it has codes for it.
Thats why I would do both at once.

You can flush the fluid if you want. If it os pretty old then maybe flush it. If it is pretty new I would not.
