Default Timing belt replacement - getting the belt off the vibration damper pulley

Hey guys!

So I was trying to change out the timing belt on my 01 V70 2.4T over the weekend and came up on a snag that I can't seem to get around. I read and read and read about not needing to remove the vibration damper pulley and that you could guide the belt around it, although tight, doable. However, when I actually got around to that area, there's a plastic shield that's covering the crankshaft gear from the vibration pulley and I can't remove that to wiggle the belt out. I don't have any air tools, so that's out, and I would reallly like to avoid buying the crankshaft counterhold tool from the dealer if possible, so if anyone can help me out, how'd you get the belt off the crank without removing the pulley?

PS: I also read somewhere that if you remove the 2x10mm bolts on the bottom of that plastic cover that's covering the bottom of the timing belt on the crank gear, that you can slide the bottom cover off...well, to me, that piece of plastic looks like it's one big piece that's incorporated with the plastic shield that goes all the way from the bottom to the top of the engine.

Don't know for sure on the '01 model but on earlier cars there's a metal shield on underside of crank pulley; two 10 mm bolts (head size; 6 mm thread) to remove to get it out of there. Impossible to get belt out/in there w/o removing it (unless you pull the pulley of course). Bet there's something similar on your car.

Found this link that seems to validate what i said (though it's an 2002 S60).

The metal shield....is that a seperate piece from the plastic backing that seperates the belt from the block? I figured it was all one piece so I started taking nuts off that plastic piece but stopped half way through it because I never heard of anyone doing that! haha

Read through some photo instructions and see if they are similar. Like this one:

I know your tensioner set up is different but other things may be the same.

Yes, it's a separate piece/shield that, once removed, allows the belt to slip under the pulley. It's still a very tight fit, but it works.

just take the crank pulley all the way off, (4) 10mm heads, and the 30mm hex nut. Pry the crank off the shaft. makes the job easy as pie.

About the black dust cover you are talking about. It is held to the block with I think 6 or 7 10 (might me 12) mm bolts. The tensioner also holds it on, and the cam gears have to come off in order to remove it.
