Top engine mounting refitting?
My 2001 V70 T5 has a very annoying thumping from the underside when going over bumps which I think is the exhaust; I replaced the centre bracket but it made no difference. At rest I can pull on the exhaust from below and it does not move at all, so I suspect something else is assisting the movement.
The top engine mount rubber has fractured so I've bought a replacement, plus two new brackets for the torsion bar to which it attaches, as this rattles as well. I think maybe the engine is moving which allows the exhaust to drop and strike the crossmember behind the centre box. I'll be fitting the new mounting myself but: on fitting, do I need to prop / jack / support the engine? I'm wondering if the engine at rest is in the correct position and I just tighten up the bolts where they go through the slotted holes on the brackets, or will it drop backwards when the top mounting is removed and so needs to be pushed or pulled back into the correct position before tightening?
Any tips for correct fitting would be appreciated!

The top mount just basically drops in.
Also check the spring seats for the front end.
Also check the lower torque rod(mount) from the transmission to the subframe.

Just replaced the mounting (twice - first mounting was rubbish quality) but I was amazed at the amount of movement in the torsion bar to which the top mounting attached - so much so that I bought new mountings for this too.
I've just fitted both and the movement of the bolts in these is still amazing. The entire bar moves backwards and forwards in the bushes, with the inner bushes flexing quite dramatically in the housing. Is this meant to happen?
