Transmission Fluid Treatment
I have a 2000 base model V70 with 92 K. The tranny seized 4 years ago at 61K and I had someone fix it. He never really told me what he did to it.
Anyway, lately the tranny bangs into gear going down steep hills. And there is a delay shifting into drive from park, so I keep my foot on the brake until I feel it shift. There is enough fluid when hot.
My question is: Should I try using a fluid treatment (additive). Which one? Are they safe? Or should I get it flushed?
How would I know if my car has the most up to date software update? Would it make a difference? And are the ONLY places that can do that an overpriced dealer?
It just seems like the fluid isn't getting to where it needs to be in time? What would cause that?

Hello, In no particular order: A dealer will tell you if updates have been installed into your units TCM. If I can believe everything I've read someone with an official Volvo computer has to buy the download from Volvo then sell it to you. In all likelihood the dealer is the way to go on downloads. If your transmission is banging into gear I'd first make certain the fluid is clean and your motor mounts are in good shape. Disconnecting the top cooling line and letting the transmission pump itself out is very easy to do. It really is fun to do. The process is well outlined on these boards. You're in the better position with a 4 speed because it takes the cheap Dex/Merc fluid. The unit is not too expensive to rebuild, should it come to that. Fluid cleanliness is usually the only "chemical" fix worth doing. In your case, since your transmission has suffered damage of some kind, finding an honest transmission shop while the car is still running, might be the best second step. Get several estimates if a rebuild is needed. Go to "Bobistheoilguy.com" and read posts about transmission flush products. Resort to one if you feel you have nothing to lose. I wouldn't get my hopes up. Accumulations of dirt, weak pumps and sticky actuators are the causes of fluid failing to get to "where it needs to be". Kira
"Banging into gear" is also a symptom of failing/ failed CV joint...Also, regarding the "delay" when shifting into drive, there should be a SLIGHT delay, and according to Volvo, you should not accelerate until you "feel" the gear engage. Obviously not like the trans is going to drop to the asphalt, but you should feel it. And the "delay" - how long? A second or two, or long enough for you to listen to your favorite song on the radio?
