CarPlay is here, but it’s a major fail
The 2.2 software for the 2022 XC60 is finally rolling out - I just installed this morning. The good news… CarPlay is finally here. The bad news… they should’ve waited to do more work!
Yes, it’s cool seeing CarPlay fill the entire generously sized screen - and make good use of it. And the fact that the voice control button has been repurposed as a Siri button (press AND HOLD to activate Siri) is great. But good luck with phone calls…
Incoming calls: Unlike prior Sensus-based Volvos that supported CarPlay, incoming call information is not presented on the driver dashboard (or HUD if you have it)… only on the center screen as part of CarPlay. So it requires taking your eyes off the road to see who is calling. Worse, the normal steering wheel controls to answer a call do not work. The only way to answer is to reach over to the touch screen. The worst part is that audio doesn’t seem to work at all on incoming calls!
Outgoing calls: Audio is fine, but ending the call has to be from the touch screen only. Again, no steering wheel control.
In both cases, it seems that the car is completely unaware that there is a phone call, except within the CarPlay environment. Contrast this with the Sensus-based cars where CarPlay managed the call, but the dashboard and steering wheel controls all worked normally.
Navigation is also a problem… iOS 15 (as well as 14 and 13!) supports a second display (i.e., the dashboard or HUD) for showing turn-by-turn. As best as I can tell, this is not supported by Volvo. I’d be fine continuing to use the Google Maps navigation (it’s one of the few things in the new Android Automotive interface that I actually like) EXCEPT Google Assistant appears to be deactivated when CarPlay is running (which sort of makes sense). So… I have to choose between using Apple’s maps which aren’t giving turn-by-turn in the driver’s field of vision, or Google when I have to manually type stuff in… Or just not use CarPlay.
(Oh, and wireless CarPlay isn’t supported)
This is not good!

I understand the expectations of CarPlay seemed to build the longer it was delayed, but honestly I don't see how it is a make or break on the overall value of this vehicle. We've enjoyed other things the past few months while in this vehicle that I forgot CarPlay was released.
