Hej - I just changed the coils on my 2016 XC60 T5 and also bough new plugs but my spark plug socket that I've used for 20 years on maybe 5 different vehicles doesn't seem to fit in the cylinder. I don't understand what the issue is - it feels like maybe it needs to be a little thinner around the sides to fit, but when I put one of the new plugs in it there's really not much extra space around the perimeter.
Anyway, I've searched around and seen a couple of videos on plug replacement on this model but have not seen mention of a special tool. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong??
What is the size of your spark plug socket 13/16 or 5/8?
It is 5/8.
I found the issue - I was at the Volvo mechanic this morning (they're replacing a cracked plastic thermostat housing ugh!) and I asked what the proper spark plug socket for this vehicle is and he showed me the socket. Sorry this isn't the best picture but if you look at it straight on you can see it has 14 points I think, as opposed to the standard 6 points. This allows them to make the sidewalls thinner and its only these thin walled sockets that fit. So I searched for this (pictured) part number on Amazon and found an equivalent one for around $10 on Amazon. Hope this helps somebody in the future who might be looking .. this is why the standard socket I've used for 20 years won't fit.
