Question XC60 engine change, camshaft position issue

Hello everyone,

I seek any help possible to help me with my problem.
Especially happy new year 2023, hoping that it will be the year of finding for my breakdown.

Short explanation:

I changed my engine on my VOLVO XC 60 I PHASE 1 5P 2.4D 163.

after this change it is very difficult to start the car. Sometimes you have to try 10-15 times (when there is enough battery left)
However when the engine is started, the car runs perfectly! (even better than before I would say).
The idle engine works perfectly too.

I have a message on the case (camshaft position).
The sensor has been changed
  • By that of the old engine, same result
  • By that of the same volvo, same result
  • By a new sensor, same result

Besides, it can also start without the AAC sensor.

Have you had this trick before? Can you guide me on another track?

I have 5V voltage at the sensor terminal.

Starting with the sensor plugged in:

Starting without the sensor (disconnected):

Any help could be appreciate <3

Have nice day

when you say hard to start - do you mean you crank for long periods of time? Regarding the cam sensor, I assume you didn't do anything to the replacement engine (ie replace a timing belt etc) that could have messed with the cam timing. One simple test I'd do is to check the connectors and ground points to the engine. Also, long cranking can be caused by low fuel pressure in the rail. As the engine cranks it actuates the pump so eventually the pressure will climb. May be work a quick check as well.

Thank you for the quick answer

Yes, exactly, Some times i have to crank it just one time and it start alomost right away and sometimes even after cranked 15 times it would not start. It seems to not start when the engine is hot or have run for a few minutes.
For example one day It started, i went to the swimming pool ( 5 min of my home ) and after the session the car never started ( i cranked it 17 times ) i went back to home and came back a couple of hours later and then it started right away.

Apparently ( info from the seller of the motors ) the engine was not open and the timing belt or anything else wasn't done. Do we have some markers to see if the time belt is well aligned ?
when you say to check for the connection on the ground point, do you mean for the AAC sensor or for the engien in general ?

can i check easily the fuel pressure ?
the ground in the sensor is OK.
I have my Vin number for my car and the engine number of the "new" one can someone say if they are strickly identical ?
