Default 02XC70 lock problems

I have an annoying problem with my door locks on my 02 XC70[:@]. I only have 1 key fob and my wife carries that (besides, I hate the extra bulk in my pocket). I use a key to operate my locks every day. The key always locks the car without any problems. But when I unlock the doors, I turn the key and it immediatly (mechanically) unlocks the door. If I open the door after this immediate unlock, the alarm goes off. What I have to do is turn the key, then wait a few seconds, until an electrical thunk noise happens. Sometimes when I turn the key and wait, this electrical thunk never happens, then I have to release the key, and when I turn it again, the electrical thunk happens right away. Has anyone else seen this issue? Its rather annoying especially when you're in a hurry and you forget, and set off your alarm. I'm a little apprehensive about tinkering with the lock assembly, since this model only has the one key lock. My fear is that one day I will not be able to get the locks to make the electrical thunk, and the alarm will go off every time I get in... and if I remember right, the only way to get the alarm to stop is to turn the key in the door.... and make the electrical thunk....[:'(]

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure exactly what thunk you are talking about. But sounds like the lock might be going bad.

The initial mechanical unlock is like any car that doesn't have power locks. You turn the key, and the **** inside the car goes up and unlocks the door. The electrical thunk noise sounds like the driver door unlock when you use the key fob. This probably happens right as you turn the key in a normal XC so you wouldn't notice the two different operations (I wouldn't know, bought it used and this one has always done this). It seems strange that there is such a long seperation between the two, and I think you're right, the lock is going out. The mechanicalunlockis probably afailsafe door opener if the electrical lock fails.

Does anyone know how much these cost? Any gotchas like programming and keying (already had to pay $180 to get an extra key ordered from overseas and programmed to the car)?

The lock is a direct swap. Nothing else needed to program it.
The only thing you need to do is make sure the lock cylinder rod is adjusted properly.
