Hello All,
Happy new year.

For some time now my V70 has intermittently not allowed shifting out of park. I have taken the console/shifter apart twice now, but nothing seems obvious. I searched these forums and found some good info, but the intermittent nature of my symptom has proven difficult to diagnose. The mechanical overide button always works (of course).

Microswitch tests ok consistantly, I don't think that's the issue
Solenoid tests ok (continuity)
Brake lights always come on, even when shift lock does not disengage, brake pedal switch appears ok
I have not tested the ignition switch, jiggling it to get the lock to disengage is unsuccessful.

Any suggestions from you 'volvo yodas' out there?

I would say the Micro switch.
They are common to go bad.
You could bypass the switch. But the draw back is that you will hear the soleniod click everytime you hit the brakes.

 

We just had a tech session on various problems and this came up. The real problem is the shifter **** itself. Run your finger along the bottom edge of the button on the shifter. if there are any breaks or gaps replace it. Part costs about $70.Vovlo pn:

My 98 V70 has the same problem. When I hit the over ride to get it out of park then my lights and signals do not work so I have to turn the car off and restart until it comes out of park. Is this the shifter **** as well and not the micro switch?
