2008 xc70 3.2 overheating in traffic
Hey guys! I have a 2008 xc70, and while on a 100 or so mile road trip the car overheated. It drove 90 miles on the highway trouble free, just for me to get stuck in traffic for 10-15 minutes and give me the high engine temp warning. I immediately pulled over and shut the car off to prevent any further damage. It was only about 70 degrees outside. The coolant level didn’t change, and after letting the car cool down, it got me to my destination with no problems. Although I normally wouldn’t, I had no choice but to drive the car back home 100 miles the next day… no traffic, so no overheating luckily. I just did the thermostat about a month ago, so I’m fairly confident that we can rule that out. I noticed that after the car told me it was overheating and I pulled over, the radiator fans weren’t running. You’d think that after turning off a car with high coolant temps the radiator fans would run/continue to run. Instead, after shutting the car off they did nothing for about a minute or two, kicked on for 5 seconds, and then shut off. They do turn on when I turn my A/C on, and at idle they will spin periodically, but it’s very slowly. I believe the fans have two different speeds, and I’ve never seen them on the higher speed unless the A/C is on. I’m leaning towards a faulty fan control unit. Any thoughts?
