NOTE: on the can it's printed "GDI" valve cleaner. That is gasoline direct injection, Where fuel is injected directly into the cylinders. Those engines do have a problem with deposits on the back of the intake valves. Your engine is not GDI.
My shops have done hundreds of valve jobs on newer (92-2015 4/5/6 cylinder) aluminum head volvos - usually due to overheating or bent valves, rarely due to a burnt valve and the intake valves have always been clean as shown in the "good" picture. So I'm sorry, if you can return that can of tune up in a can and get your money back - do it - it's a waste of money on a 01-07 5 cylinder Violvo engine. (yes I have seen many intake valves that looked like the "bad" picture - on older cars with carbs. - carbed 60s and 70s Jags were the worst that I saw - the intake valves looked just like the "bad" pictures! From what I understand some of the GDI cars have the same problem with build up on the back of the intake valves relating to the PCV system dumping oil fumes into the intake system. )
yep, if you are in the habit of running brand name premium (ie 93 grade), there's enough detergent in the fuel to keep valves clean. The only exception here is the direct injection engines which push the fuel directly in (so you don't get the cleansing action) - for those its not uncommon to have the engines cleaned professionally using walnut shell blasting and similar techniques (about every 100K miles). If you have been cheap on the fuel, you can get the same by dropping a can of Techron injector cleaner into the tank every oil change or so. Again no need to try a product like this as there's simpler solutions.
