Default Intermittent problems with 2001 XC70 starting

I have a 2001 XC70. For the past few weeks, the car would intermittently not start. With a quick jump from another car, it would start up.

I checked little things, like was the glove compartment open, lights on, etc. Nothing. Finally, took it to the dealership. They said that the electric turbo valve? was staying open? and was causing the electricity to drain. $200 parts and labor and the recommendation to buy a new battery.

I replaced the turbo valve and declined on the battery, with the intention of waiting to see if the battery would hold charge or not after the initial repair. (they want another $200 for the battery)

The car was fine for two days. Then, today, I drove this morning on three short trips. (all without jumps required, even overnight, in the mornings so I think the battery is ok?) On the fourth, the car would again not start on the way home. It clicks like it is trying to start but required a jump to actually get going. This time, however, I also received an error message "engine system service urgent" Searching forums, I keep seeing this message related to an ETM. I am wondering if the ETM would cause my car not to start to begin with and if this may be the problem.

I am scared to drive the car now as several of the notes I have read regarding the ETM describe sudden loss of power while driving down the road.

Any thoughts?

I highly doubt the ETM is related.
I would have the battery and charging system tested.
