Default Low MPG on a 2007 XC70

Hey all,

I bought a 2007 XC70 with 116k miles from the original owner this last summer. It is in great shape mechanically, the original owner had it serviced at the dealership from the day they purchased it, including all recommended maintenance at the respective intervals.

I've been driving it for about 6 months now and love it; however, the mpg is nowhere near what I see some folks getting. This winter I have been getting around 17-18 mpg max, mainly city driving though. But even with a mix of city and highway I never break 20 mpg. I recently did a trip that was all highway and I think I might have gotten close to 22 mpg.

The car does have Bridgestone Blizzax winter tires on it at the moment, but other than that I don't drive it too hard to keep it loaded down with crap. So I'm wondering, is there anything in particular with these that can cause such low MPG? Fortunately I don't drive too much so it isn't quite breaking the bank yet even with putting 93 in it. But I'd just like to know what I can do to get better mpg.

My plan is to do a spark plug change soon. I did already change the air filter as well. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Having owned several of those (01-07 v xc 70) 20 mpg is normal.

If the mixture was far enough off, either lean or rich - you would get a check engine light.

Perhaps if you replaced the O2 sensors for many hundreds of dollars, you might get 1 mpg more.

Plus if you live in a colder climate area with "winter blend" fuel you will see a drop of 1-2 mpgs vs the summer. Try running a few tankfuls of brand name 93 octane then measure again. this will be enough to help clean up the injectors. As far as the tune up goes, air filter, fresh plugs (go genuine Volvo to make sure you get the correct part), correct weight synthetic oil are good for starters. Do you see anything odd about how the temp guage acts? That may give a clue if your ECT is acting up.
