Unhappy XC70 - how can the AWD break?

I drive a XC70 - 2005. My AWD is broken. And I only realised that when it was too late (no error showed up on the dashboard). The guy who had to pull me out with a tractor said: "you are already the third Volvo I am rescuing".

So does that mean this is a typical Volvo issues? Have other experienced the same? Will it cost me a lot to have it fixed? And how can the AWD break? What do you know? Best Regards from snowy Switzerland.

Not sure how different the cars in Switzerland are. But there are two thing that normally happen, 1) is the pressure sensor in the DEM, if it is not reading right then it won't apply pressure to the AWD. 2) The coupler between the trans and the bevel gear can strip out..
