Default 2004 xc90 "clunk" while shifting gears

2004 xc90 2.5t awd. with 220,000 miles. While shifting the gear lever from Park to Drive, Park to Reverse or Drive to park the car has a slight "clunk". It also has a faint "clunk" when lifting on the accelerator and pressing the accelerator while driving. After reading a few threads on here I figured I would change out the torque thrust mount, upper engine mount (where the strut brace connects) and both the strut brace mounts. All were worn and in need of replacement. Clunk is still there. Any further ideas on areas to check? Other mounts? Axles bolts?

I'm fairly mechanically inclined but am new to Volvos so any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

I'd start by looking for diagrams on a dealer web store page for your model to look for where there are motor mounts and transmission mounts. You may need to watch how the motor and transmission moves when somebody drops the car into gear or revs up the engine (don't stand in front or have the car pointed at the garage :-) You can also "power brake" the car to see how the engine moves... Clunks can also be within the axles - typically the inner joint, or it can be control arm bushings, sway bar bushings/end links, subframe bushings etc. all should be inspected. Any driveability issues? noises over bumps/odd handling?

Yeah I'm going to try inspecting under the hood while someone shifts through the gears to see if I can see anything moving. Control arm bushings have some slight wear, sway bar links look good. I'll have to take a look at the subframe bushings. Drivability issues I would say no. There is some noise coming from the passenger side when going over small bumps. My thoughts are the strut mounts possibly...

Default Update?

Hullo

Would like to confirm if you ever resolved these clunk issues. I'm also troubleshooting similar symptoms.

Cheers.
