Default 2004 XC90 T6 - multiple problems

My wife and I purchased a used XC90 in Oct. 2006. At that time we were looking for a vehicle we could depend on for years to come ----- boy, were we wrong. The first repair came in March 2007 ----- the transmission failed costing us approx $4000.June 2007, the next failure was the seals in the transfer case ----- costing us $1300. Here we are again March 2008, now we are told the turbo has to be replaced - $2000 for one turbo but if both have to be replaced it could be $4000. Needless to say this particular Volvo has left a bad taste in our mouth, and we will never purchase another one. That being said if you are looking to purchase a 2004 XC90.......please don't. Oh by the way.....when we contacted Volvo customer service they offered 20% off up to $200 (if my math is correct I believe that's $20!!!!!!)

Please note my wife uses this vehicle as her daily car, driving only about 10 - 15 miles per day........and she doesn't go 4-wheeling in the car!!!! This car is not mistreated in any way.

But it was used and you have no idea how it was treated before. I think unless you buy certified pre owned you always run the risk of dealing with the treatment it had before you bought it. For Volvo to even offer you 20 in my opinion is lucky for you seeing as the car was used and I assume way past warranty.
Still I understand how frustrating it is to have one thing after another go.

Good Luck.

I'm really sorry to hear about your problems with the T6. Too bad you didn't check this forum before you purchased because there have been many postings with warnings about the T6 with the GM!!!! tranny. The 2005 and newer V8 has the Yamaha 6-speed.

I agree with the suggestion about certified pre owned. The price may be a bit higher, but you'll likely save on the long runwhen buying froma Volvo dealer. I also strongly recommend getting the extended warranty.

Actually, as odd as it may sound we do know the previous owners and they never had any problems. I agree with your post about the warranty, we are considering buying one now. Any suggestions??

yamaha builds the Engine not the trans, the trans is a getrag 6 spd, and is now put in *most* of the new xc70's/ 90's and s80.

I'm sorry but somedealers/shopstake advantage of you, once they figure you don't know much about cars.

As to extended warranty, I am personally against it, because I have heard of too many horror stories, and extended warranty is a huge money maker for many businesses. Refer to the URL links at the end of this reply. I would put the money aside and keep it for future repair/scheduled maintenance. This way your money is guaranteed to be used, but the money you spend on an extended warranty isn't. If you insist on getting one, however, do your homework and MAKE SURE to read all fine prints & ask all uncertainties before spending a good chunk of your hard-earned money.

I have heard of too many horror stories with people withoutextended warranty. Just about anything major will cost you way more than theprice of the wrranty. Ask the owners who got the GM tranny. I agree that you should carefully review and comparewarrananty options. If you decided to get it, make sure you get one thatcovers your sound/navigation system, etc. if applicable. If you decide to keep the vehicle for another 50K, the 100K warranty is a great investment - spaking from own experience. We already had our DVD entertainment system replaced on warranty once (no deductable)and chances are it will happen again.
