2005 XC90 V8 problems?
#21
wow.......reading all these posts makes me worry. We just bought a 2005 XC90 V8 with 80,000miles. I thought these engines were bullet proof.......i guess not.
We have only had the vehicle for just over a week and i have already noticed an odd noise that can be heard when the car is in the higher of the gears cruising along barely applying any gas. Its like a knocking sound but can only be heard when the higher gears are underload and you are trying to just slow accelerate. Its hard to explain. Does this sound similar to anyone?
I have contacted the dealer i purchased the car from to arrange to bring it to them. It was a larger dealership so i am hopefully they wont try and run away given it has only been 1 week.

volvo XC 90 V8 technical problems
I own a XC 90 V8 2005. Had for almost € 8500,-- on repairs over the last 3 years !!! No support or backup from volvo.
Took the matter even to their main office in Sweden.
1. balance shaft bearing in the engine went bad. Is a known problem up to engine S/N 6833. After that they modified the engine block.
2. Ignition lock frozen, also a frequent problem.
3. Generator shot, heard this one before.
4. Rear wheel baerings bad.
Before I owend 3 other volvos 240-740 and 850, perfect cars, lots of miles no problems. What happend to the once so high quality Swedisch brand over the past years ?

Think I might be the latest XC90 V8 owner to experience the delight of the Yamaha design. Engine number 6163 with 111k miles.
Driving home yesterday after 80 mile highway journey, pull up to a stop light less than a mile from home and hear a very faint rattle noise. Pulled into the driveway and opened the hood. The sound is coming from directly under the "Volvo" & "V8" Labelled manifold. Left it off overnight, started this morning; no noise initially, after a few minutes it starts again. Its not overly loud but I'm suspecting that's due to it not completely failing...yet.
Called Volvo dealer who want $125/hour to diagnose. Local Euro specialist wants $60 per hour to diagnose.
So a couple of questions to those who've dealt with this before:
1. If I had the local Euro guy investigate and fix is there any chance I can get Volvo NA to step up to cover any of the cost once confirming this is the issue?
2. Long shot...but is there any other problem that might cause the rattle under the manifold?

Diagnosis confirmed today by Volvo specialist. Total damage in Parts & Labor is $5200. Can't describe my state of mind!
Anyone think Volvo NA would help? I know they helped in the 2006-2011 timeframe but anyone had help in 2013?

Since you went to an independent shop, I very much doubt they will help at all.
Goodwill is usually for loyal customers. They look at it like an investment. If a customer has been bringing their car to the dealership for service and they encounter an expensive repair, Volvo may help to keep a customer.
But if a customer has been going elsewhere, what good would it be for Volvo to cover anything beyond the warranty period?
