Default 2006 - removing oil filter

I need some advice on removing the oil filter for my '06 XC90. I have the cap wrench and attempted to remove the cartridge filter cap yesterday (after draining the old oil). Let me say I put everything I had into it and could not remove it.

I fought with it for about 30 mins and ended up caving and left the old filter on, but added new oil. Anyone have suggestions to help get it removed?

Thanks.

IF you are using the volvo tool, you need to get some leverage on it. I am thinking 1/2" drive with adapter to 3/8". In florida?

Any way to get the cup off without oil leaking everywhere?

The Lexus cap has a drain plug on it to drain the oil in the cup before removal. Why Volvo can't think of that?

I'm not saying impossible, but not likely.

Why can't FORD think of that?

I worked in a lube and tire shop for about four years, and it isn't just the volvo's, internal filters in general are a major pain in the tail. The only ones that I don't mind are the ones on top (some BMWs, GM Ecotec, some Kia V6s). Even some of the designs that have drains are still a pain. The new Toyota engines have a drain-plug on their filter canisters, but you need to shove a little plastic tool up into the opening to release the valve, so you're still getting hot oil running over your hand.

As for your oil filter... I'd break out a small cheater bar. I imagine you're using a 3/8 ratchet, so you could even use a large box-wrench(18mm+) to use as a cheater. If you have the correct cup, you shouldn't have to worry about damaging the canister. At the shop, if a canister was a little rounded and the cup wouldn't grab enough to break the filter loose, we would use a 3-arm claw (like the one found here) as a last resort. But, this claw can put some dents in the canister.

You may want to try it while it's still hot, some taps with a hammer and a penetrating oil may help you out. When you do get it out, be sure to grease the new gasket, and I would make sure all of the treads were well-oiled. As long as you're oiling the filter, and removing it every 3,000-6,000 miles, you shouldn't run into this problem often.
