We purchased a 2016 XC90 T6 a few months ago and decided to change the oil. Had a heck of a time with the filter canister, even used a filer tool which grips pretty well and still no go. Actually never did get it off as I didn't want to put too much pressure on it. So left the old one in and refilled. I figured I would buy one of the 86mm canister tools which fits over the cover and try that.

Does anyone have experience with the canister being on that tight?

Also, what is up with no dipstick to check the oil - I guess I am old school!

Using the proper tool makes a big difference. What kind of oil filter wrench were you using?

 

I tried a collapsing oil wrench tool which tightens as its turned. It gripped it but I didn't put too much pressure on it because of fear of cracking it.
I went and bought a 16 flute 86mm cap wrench, I'll give that a try soon.

Got the 16 flute 86 mm cap wrench and still couldn't budge it. I tried everything I know to free it without risking damaging it.
Has anyone ran into this before?

 

Update on this, I bought a different wrench which is 85.5 mm 16 flute. The thinking is it may fight tighter?

Also, does the canister thread off clockwise or counterclockwise?

 

Its standard thread. CCW to loosen. Try a longer ratchet for more leverage.
