2016 XC90 Questions: reliability, extended warranty($3225)
I like the design of new XC90. For 2016 model, dealers doesn't have big discounts and the shared prices by others in autopriceshare are all above invoice. A local dealer give me $1300 off MSRP for T6 Momentum and I am going to take this deal.
Since 2016 model has many improvements and changes, I am not so sure about its reliability. Some people here are specialists of Volvo, what do you think about the new XC90? For the new 2016 model, Should I pay $3225 for 3 years extended warranty?
Any suggestions are helpful for me.

It is a sweet looking ride. I was at Volvo getting oil change in my 05 XC90 and they didnt have a 2016 yet but salesman gave me a thing called Google cardboard and a link to a App for my smart phone. It was a device to see a virtual 3D look at the new 2016 using your smart phone. Pretty neat little gadget. It was like sitting in the car. You could move your head around and the view would move with you.

I test drove the 2016 Momentum yesterday and was quite impressed. I was skeptical about a 4 cylinder pushing that large of a vehicle, but the transmission was rather smooth and I never felt a lag. The car had the normal suspension and it handled bad roads quite well, and steering feel was very tight. The interior of this vehicle is nothing short of spectacular: Everything has an upscale look and the materials are of high quality. If Volvo can get past the first year without any major reliability hick-ups, this could be the vehicle that puts them back on the map.
That being said, I'm terrified at shoveling out close to $60k for a big unknown. I've had nothing but Japanese vehicles for the past 10 years and the most I've spent was $600 for a new radiator on a Toyota. Lexus, and Infiniti have been flawless with no issues past 100k miles.
Now Volvo has to come out with this freakin' amazing new vehicle which blows away anything the Japanese put out. The new 2016 Lexus is fugly and I've become quite bored with my current Infiniti JX. I hate the new Acura MDX and the Lexus GX sucks too much gas.
Some have been ******* Volvo's Chinese ownership, but I think that an Asian owner may be what they need to turn the corner. BUT, the reliability issue is BIG in my mind. Not to mention, I find it sort of ridiculous to shell out over $3k for an extended warranty. What's the consensus of long term Volvo owners......?

But look at the rep Volvo got during the time Ford had it.
It can only get better with the Chinese. Ford almost ruined it.
The ****ty Trany on the T6. The fact that the XC 90 didn't change for almost 10 yrs. other then tail lights a tad.
I hope with the Chinese, Volvo make a big turn around. With what I see with the new 2016 xc90 I think they are on the right track.

Soooo not into extended warranties. Think about it, why would a dealer or third party offer an extended warranty that would lose money for them? Also, remember that "extended warranties" are not, by any stretch, extensions of manufacturer warranties. They typically have numerous limitations and exclusions which will rarely cover most of the things that will likely break. Yes, I'm sure that there are stories out their how somebody had a major breakdown that cost mega bucks that was covered by an extended warranty, but that is the exception more than the rule.
Bottom line, these programs would go away if they paid out more than they took in.

owned 10 cars in the past 15 years. Never bought the extended warranty.
1. You don't know how long you will keep the car. Factory warranty covers 4-5 years. 50k miles.
2. Manufacturer and 3rd party company always offer extended warranty right before your factory warranty expires. So if you decide to keep the car much longer. You can just buy it then.
In my opinion. No reason to pay the dealer $3000 up front for services you won't need for 4 years (or never need if you get rid of the car).

Bought mine 10 days ago
After MUCH research and many test drives, I ended up buying a 2016 XC90 Inscription. I was very skeptical about the engine and really wanted to buy a Q7 for this reason alone but, in the end, the XC90 is more beautiful inside and outside and has more bang for the buck in raw features. And guess what... That little engine sorta rocks. I've done two real highway trips in it since I bought it and felt no deficit in power. 80 MPH is only 2,100 on the tac and it's quiet and smooth the whole way. I'm a real Audi fan, my previous daily driver being an RS-5, but in this case I'm glad I threw off the shackles of the German automotive industry.
So go for it. Granted I'm only 2 weeks in, but I have no regrets so far.
As to the extended warranty question... I never buy them. BUT, full disclosure, my XC90 was a Volvo area rep's car with a few thousand miles on it. The dealer certified it and gave me a 100k warranty. Being how new EVERYTHING on this car is, I sort of like the peace of mind.

I held off until the dealers had a mix of 2016 and 2017 models and negotiated around. Ended up paying about $2,500 premium for a 2017 Momentum, with Mom+, Vision and Convenience (versus 2016 identical car about 100 miles away) - and couldn't be happier.
The extended warranty is a for profit industry - but also is negotiable... I don't buy them - but did negotiate and pay $300 for the "interior protection" package that my dealership offered. This protects all the leather - since i know that my kids are rough on it... Key with any of these warranties is to USE THEM... If you see any issue that might be covered - you have to commit the time to take it in and push them to make it "like new"...
