Default 2016 XC90, Low Oil after 2500 Miles

Hello, I have noticed over the past 6 months our car needs a quart of oil every 2500 miles or so. Most recently, had the oil changed in Oct, again put 2500 miles on the car since then, got the low oil warning message, and added a quarter. 2nd time this has happened since the summer, last time same thing needed oil about 2500 miles after the oil was changed. Don't see any leaks, is this normal, seems odd. Car is a 2016, has about 100K miles on it now. Other then that, everything running well. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated? We did make an appointment to bring it into the dealership end of next week to get it looked at.

You might need a PCV breather box, depending on engine serial number. There is a bulletin for that.

If that doesn't work, you'll likely need piston rings.

Thank you, that is very helpful. Bit worried as I know if the piston rings, very very expensive repair. If it is the piston rings, could we drive the car okay for the next year if we just keep the oil topped off? I am planning to sell the car next year. Thanks again.

Assuming you have the PCV serviced and still consume some oil, a quart every 2500 miles is annoying but shouldn't keep you from driving - historically "high oil consumption" would be on the order of a quart or more every 1000 miles. You will want to just check your oil level every 2-3 tankfuls of gas just to make sure its not getting worse.

Here's a link to the "how to"

That was the first 4cyl for these volvo suvs. We can see problems occurring now. I have never felt this engine was big enough for these heavy SUVS. . You have to work these motors so hard to move these vehicles that they are going to have problems, That is my opinion, but I would like to see other opinions. thanks

Well many new MERCEDES SPRINTERS are now with 2.0L engines and also FORD TRANSIT 2.0L 4 cyl and these are commercial vans capable of handling much heavier loads than XC90. Maybe 2.0 is not that weak afterall.

Issue was not resolved. I spent 3000 for changing turbo and it did not help at all. I sold car as-is. I switched to Lexus RX350 V6, maybe in future will buy 2024 EX90 ( electric so no more OIL ISSUES )

suneel, as ES6T noted, most likely causes are either bad rings or a PCV issue. The diagnosis for another car is not a diagnosis for yours so you should have your local shop check it out for you. The good news is changing the PCV oil separator is a lot easier on newer cars than on the early white blocks (on an 850 you need to lift up the intake manifold to access the parts...) on newer cars the PCV is right up top. If you are inclined to replace this on your own, there's vids on youtube. The bad news is there's a growing history of specific Volvo engines needing rings or rings and pistons to correct an oil consumption issue. Adding a quart every 2500 miles is certainly a lot cheaper than getting rebuild.

@suneel Same issue with mine - replaced the pistons when we did the timing belt and issue was still present (1L ever 2500 KM). Turned out to be a bad valve cover gasket and did not become apparent until oil was seeping in to the coil packs, engine went in to limp mode and when we took the foam engine cover off you were able to see the coil packs were full of oil. $5k Repair bill for new valve cover gasket kit, coil packs, plugs and labor. Recommendation - SELL IT ASAP if not in limp mode.
