AWD not engaging

AWD not engaging
I have a 2004 XC90 AWD.
I noticed when we got some snow & ice, that I had trouble making it up my driveway.
I got out and watched (while my wife attempted to get up the drive) and found out that the front was pulling, but that was it. The rear never engaged.
Any thoughts? help?
