Brand New XC90 and already broken
After 2 weeks.....I left the keys in the ignition overnight (OK, completely turned off!) and in the morning the battery was flat. Automobile Club tells me this happens, Volvo dealer says not while Volvo Belgium says certain electrical circuits are triggered just by leaving the keys in......Can this really be the case??
Now with the car 3 weeks old, the automatic gear box is broken....stuck in 3rd gear manual and auto doesn't work. Not bad for a brand new car. Am I alone with such an experience or is this "normal"?If so, not looking forward to 4 years of a leasing contract....

Not sure I understand, but first, car shouldn't start if the transmission is in gear. And transmission shifter should not move if the keys are not in the ignition !?!?
Put the keys in the ignition, turn ignition in position 2 and the transmission lever should move freely...... Put it in P and the car should start......
Never hear of anything like that in any car make..... Even nightmarish Land rovers.....

Volvo doesn't work
The gearstick will move, so will start and reverse, but in Drive sits only in 3rd. That is a default setting in a Volvo to allow you to drive a minimum without blowing up the gearbox when it detects an "anomaly".
Not sure what you have against LandRover, but this is my first car in 30+ years of driving that has broken down, twice, within 3 weeks of purchase.

Owned Land rovers for the looks and social status, until I got sick of fixing them time and time again..... You'd fix something and sure enough, something else would break... my last one was a Series 2 Discovery in which I spent $9000.00 in the last 3 years of ownership...... and I did all of the work myself except for engine work.... add labor to what I did myself and you are well into $12000.00
I use to love them and consider the drivers as lucky people... Now I see one and hate them and can't help but think to myself that the driver is a poor sap....
But back to your XC.... I just don't get it !?!?

Well Volvo is worse asI get this in the first month after delivery. No sooner do I get the car back, supposedly repaired, it breaks down again with exactly the same "repair automatic gear box" error message and it will drive only in 3rd gear. With 3 breakdowns in 4 weeks, there is no chance of me feeling impressed with my first (and last) Volvo; brand new with 2,000 km on the clock
