I've developed a fuel leak, been noticing a strong gas odor near back rear of car

this morning I simply turned ignition over to roll down windows and heard dripping, I an see gas dripping down from a canister that is strapped to the bottom of the frame

a quick Google Search shows me its the fuel filter, and according to some similar posts on here it's a pretty easy replacement even for the non mechanically inclined like myself

assuming I buy the filter and have the socket wrench to remove the metal strap, what am I looking at fuel wise?

right now my car is at likes quarter of a tank. I need to get to it asap but might not be able to till mid week depending on where I can get part and the time to set aside

will removing filter cause entire fuel tank to pour out or just what's been sent through from the pump? In other words if I throw some gas in it to get through a few days will it all end up in the tray I put down?

all the fuel in tank will not come out. some will. you can minimize it by relieving pressure , there are better ways but easiest is to remove gas cap. new filter should have little caps on the ends which can be used to block flow from filter while you are disconnecting and connecting fuel lines,and you can usse something like a golf tee to temporarily block fuel line. i would ask someone who;s done it to help you. it is a nasty job because you have fuel spillling on your hands while working. don't smoke.

 

It won't drain the tank. Removing the gas cap won't do anything. Release the fuel pressure by depressing the core on the test port at the fuel rail under the hood (looks like a tire valve). Remove the metal strap and then disconnect the lines and connect them to the new one. Only takes a minute.
