Default Mechanic Botch Job Help!!!!!!

hello everyone , just looking for an opinion on my latest discovery left by the monkey botch job mechanics , there seems to be a problem with my air inlet / intake as there is a big hole where there is not supposed to be on the inside of the engine bay also they have filled the inlet / intake with body filler i want to know as to why someone would do this , to my way of thinking they didnt want to pay for a new MAF sensor so thought this up to regulate the temperature which hasnt worked as now my engine is roaring and has no power , here is the image below any information would be greatly appreciated

2004 XC90 2.5T I5

thanks for your time

kind regards

Chris

A hole there will not effect MAF readings. I have no idea what they were trying to do

is the check engine light on? if so get codes pulled. this was really a hare-brained repair. i would replace that intake tubing and replace the air filter. what were they trying to fix anyway?

Yeah replace the pipe or at least get the body filler out if possible. It's probably starving for air.

Default thanks for the replies

here is some more information

there is an engine code its P0300 ( P0302 & P0305 )

intermittant misfire in cylinders 2 & 5

so far ive had the coils changed, spark plugs torqued and gapped correctly,
fuel rail and injectors, catalyst and had compression check done by a mechanic

the mechanic told me that the coils were faulty this could be correct as i got them from the scrappy of an XC90 2006 with only 60k on the clock but i was told it doesnt matter about the mileage its about the coils rusting over time ??

the symptoms are i cant get the car to start when its below 0 degrees outside
also the engine is very loud and there is no power

there is also a leak underneath the front bumper that sprays up and along the sump protection tray but i cant pinpoint where its coming from without taking the entire bumper off i think it may be the power steering but not 100%

thanks for your help guys

Random misfires are tough. My daughter had a misfire issue that ended up being connected to a loose fuel rail.

As for that tube going INTO the air box. That tube helps the intake system get cooler, fresher air. Anything prior to the air filter is not as big of a deal as tubes after the air box. Just get that tube replaced, not big deal. Wish I could help with your misfire but it sound like you have done most of the trouble shooting already. What were the compression numbers like?

Maybe take a real close look at the coil wire connectors.

trying swapping coils on 2 & 5 with other coils and see if the misfire moves around with coils.

thanks for all your feedback so far , in answer to your question the mechanic who did the compression check said the numbers were dead on

as for the coil swap idea i forgot to mention that i already did that with coils 1 & 3 from my other set however the mechanic told me they were all no good so its possible the ones from my old set were bad too however it seems to me that it doesnt matter what i do at this point the error code is always cylinders 2 & 5 ..... other posibilities would be the timing belt or bad valaves right ????? im getting very confused

thanks again guys

Chris

I'd also be curious to know the compression numbers. If he thought filling that fresh air pipe with body filler and drilling a hole in it would fix this... or fix anything... I don't trust what he says. A cylinder leakage test should also be performed. If the coils, plugs and injectors have been eliminated, I would put my money on valves.

Make sure the ground connection for the coils are tight. 2 & 5 are the ground connections. Also, I have been working on a car and seen a coil fail because I looked at it the wrong way. Also seen defective spark plugs. Seen burnt valve go overnight. Do a running vacuum test that will confirm faulty valves. From what is being said, thinking exhaust valves burnt. Cause being the ethanol in gas nowadays.

Default Oh goodie!!!

hi guys,

thanks for the continued feedback, ive just fixed the air intake last night i had to hacksaw the plastic cap that someone had glued on the end and fill the makeshift hole with body filler should do the job for now untill i can source a new part from the scrappy

also the mechanic i use didnt touch the air intake that was done by someone else who owned the car prior

bad news about it possibly being the exhaust valves my XC90 being the 2004 apparently has known valve problems i did notice actually when the mechanic replaced my catalyst the engine code went away and the car had alot more power and the engine was not making so much noise now around 500km later its returned to its usual self i hope it hasnt blocked the cat again ....

its really embarrassing when my in laws dodge nitro starts up first time and my volvo which is superior in quality wont start for all the tea in china

anyways ive ordered a new thermostat and coils from IPD hopefully they will do the trick if not i guess ill be having the head off this summer ... sigh

oh quick mention - when i checked the dipstick last i noticed oil had been forced all the way up could this be a sign of a blocked PCV???

thanks again guys

Chris

Default problem fixed

ok just to wrap up this post , the problem was old coils and the battery was not the correct specification for the job in this cold climate someone obviously didnt want to pay for a $300 battery with the sufficient cranking amps

i hope this helps in future solve this issue with intimittant misfire

part ive replaced so far new -

IPD Coils

fuel filter

fuel rail and injectors

spark plugs

patched air intake

K & N air filter

oil serveral times

oil filter

I also have to install a new thermostat but in the end it was definatly the battery
