Default Muffler just fell off my 2007 volvo xc90...

Hi all,

I just got towed to a shop because my muffler fell off on my 2007 volvo xc90. It detached from the back and is dragging, the front is still attached. I noticed yesterday and this morning driving to work my car sounded like a race car and then it fell off this afternoon.

Can anyone estimate what the cost of the repair should be? Would just the muffler need to be replaced then essentially do you think?

Thank you!

really depends on how it broke. Your shop would need to put it up on a lift and inspect. You didn't mention which model but assuming you have a 3.2 and not the V8, the two downpipes meet at the front muffler ($250 at Tasca Parts) then that feeds into the rear muffler ($450). if it fell off, it may be repairable with some welding and new hangers. There's some related hardware that holds up the pipes so that may total another $100 but I doubt if you'd need to replace both the front and rear mufflers.

They want to charge me around $750 for a front muffler replacement. Doesn’t this seem oddly high? Said they have to get parts from the Volvo dealer but that seems high to me. It’s a local shop.

I assume they are paying local dealer list pricing plus hardware so lets say that comes to 450, plus 2 hours labor and tax and your right about 750. Did you go to a indy mechanic or a muffler shop? a muffler shop would probably be willing to look at welding up a repair. If you can get a temporary fix you can always get the parts mail order to say a few bucks assuming your shop is ok with you providing parts. Tasca's located in Rhode Island so if you are not in the northeast you may want to search for a more local dealer web store.

Not a muffler shop, but I did call up another place and the guy said he can either weld it or put on a non-volvo muffler so that's the route I'm going to go so I'm having it towed there instead. Thanks for your help! If I were to buy the volvo part down the line, do you have a link by chance to what it is? Does it come with the hardware? (Sorry I'm a younger female so not trying to come off like a complete novice haha).

Thanks for your help!
