Default Need advise...xc90 shopping

I am looking for an xc90 for my wife, and after reading here is seems that we should stay away from the t6 model. We are looking at the 2003-2005 models.

Which ones come with that GM transmission? Is it an awd or just FWD problem?

How about the 2.5t models?

Hi, welcome to the forum.

My wife drives an '05 XC90 with the V-8 and six speed trans, AWD. I wouldn't personally look for anything but that combination.

We get 19-20 mpg with our V-8 which is very respectable considering my wife's driving habits (not a maniac, but doesn't wait around either). I've recall other posts here indicating the smaller motors don't get mileage anywhere close to that.

The V-8 is a Yamaha built motor developed and built originally for the Ford Taurus SHO,I understand its been tweaked a bit for the XC90,but in any event is a stable platform.

I'm not a technical expert on them, but it seems the 03 and 04 models had a bit of problems which seems to be ironed out by the time the 05's were introduced. This might just be perception, however. If you read through the XC90 threads you'll find a link to recall history for the XC90 and can use that as a reference tool to help you with your decision.

Good luck and welcome again! Keep us posted.

I have been disappointed with our 2006 2.5 FWD milage. 16-17 mpg hwy and in town is all we get. It does not seem to be "too under powered" but the engine can be felt as you go down the road.

We are still favorable overall, love the quality and no real issues. We did expect better mpg...........

I wouldn't even think of 2005 (2004) or prior XC90s with GM transmission.

EDIT: 2005seems safe; the GM gearbox was discontinued on 2005 models.

I want to say thanks for the informative reading here. I almost bought a t6 for a real good deal on Tuesday. I did the reading here and retracted my offer after we agreed on a price. Here is the link. I got the guy to accept an offer of $15200 after the auction had ended.

thanks again......still looking for a 2.5t

I personally like the V8 - I have a 2007. For a vehicle around 4,000 LBS, you need a big engine to pull it around. I had a 2005 2.5, but it was very under powered for me. So you have to decide whether you want performance or good fuel economy. My wife had a 2.5 as well and loved it!

Did I understand you correctly when said that the gm gear box was NOT used on the '05 T6's?

I believe that in 2005 they decided to discontinue them. I think 06 and above are o.k. Basically if it is T6, the transmission isn't the good one.

Our 2004, 2.5, FWD, has not given us any problems and it's over 90K now. We stuck to the maintenance schedule religiously though.

I ended up buying this one yesterday. It seems pretty nice. I flew out to charlotte NC and I am driving back to Indiana with it.

Is there a place to get floor mats at a good price?

Looks nice! Congrats on your purchase. I guess you will get to know it on your drive home. We almost went to Florida to get an XC90, we live in Texas.

There are floor mats at about every auto parts store or retail store with auto accessories. The trick is getting some that fit right, some are cutable. I have heard good things from Weathertech (aftermaket) floor mats purchased on line.
