Default Performance Improvements ??

My 93 XC-90 was slated as getting 18 miles to the gallon in the city. I opted for the 5 cylinder for this reason. Between the turbo lag (quite significant) and the poor gas mileage - a constant 14 I'm a little frustrated. Are there any modifications I can do that will reduce the turbo lag and/or increase the gas mileage? For the record it is an 03 5cyl with AWD. well, just to make sure, volvo didnt make the xc90 in 93. do u mean 2003? <img border="0" src=smileys/smiley1.gif border="0"> anyways, to reduce turbo lag and probably increase gas mileage, removing the turbo would be a good start. this might mean getting a custom manifold but would really help. on a more practical note, u could maybe get a custom made turbo from another retailer that might not have as much lag, but this could be very expensive. this is all i can think of other than just dealing with it.

You could get a custom ECU for the car that would get rid of a lot of the turbo lag by increasing boost pressure on the turbo, but it would do nothing to help the gas mileage. For gas mileage increases, I always get after myself about my driving habits and take it easy on the accelerator. A/C also uses up a considerable amount of fuel, I realized that I don't always need it, so turn it off whenever I really don't.
