Default Want to buy a used xc90, need advice

Hello all,

I am new to Volvo and am looking into the purchase of a used xc90. Looking at 2007 and 2008 and was wondering what the major differences are in the two model years.

Overall I see quite a bit of negative talk in regards to the 2003-2005 model years, is this consistant with the 2007 and 2008? it makes me a little nervous.

Is there anything I should expect or look out for? Anything I want to stay away from?

The only XC90's that have had major transmission issues are the T6 models. I own an 06 XC90 2.5T AWD and love it. I am pretty sure the 07 still offers the 2.5T engine and the only options in the 08 is the 3.2 and the V8. Just my opinion, but I feel that the 2.5T is one of the best motors Volvo offers.

Whatever model you do get; make sure it has some warranty left on it. Past January I purchased an '07 V8 AWD which had only 19,000 miles and really do love the car. However, so far we have had 1- Left tie rod replaced; 2- Rear passenger wheel bearings replaced; 3- Sunroof water leak onto passenger floor; 4- climate fan replaced caused by #3; 5- Rear driver light housing condensation inside; and 6- Oil leak between engine block and tranny. All replaced/repaired under warranty. Whew!!!

The jury is still out on our 2005 XC90 V8 transmission issue with the aisian-warner transmission but from what I understand from the info here and elsewhere the V8 engined transmission are generaly bullet proof, we just got unlucky..hopefully Volvo will step up and do the right thing.
The GM based/built transmission get all the poor marks. For the model years you are looking for Volvo may have a certified used car somewhere, the warranty is factory backed, much better than an aftermarket service "insurance policy". After my experience I would fly one way for the "right" car.
As always get the lowest mileage car you can afford, get a genuine Volvo certified used car warranty, and get the V8... it rips and its a gem...
As for the differnces between the 07 and 08 I am too new to the brand to know better but we love ours. Good hunting.

A couple more thoughts.. research all technical bulletins and recalls on the .gov site and ask the selling dealer to check/ verify the vehicle you are intrested in, insist all items are done prior to purchase... some recalls and bulletins fall only within certain serial number ranges but can always go below or over a number of units... get service records, up to date verifiable service records are a must for me, Volvo should only certify cars with good history.
Carfax, ask for it for free.
