XC 90 sand driving
Hi everyone,
Just joined, I live in Australia.
Have had XC90 D5 2 yrs and delighted with it. Off-road ability surprisingly capable with torquey diesel motor and 16:1 1st gear plus traction control compensating for limited supsension articulation (have had 1 wheel 2 ft off ground but still kept going!)
However I sorely tested its limits in heavy soft-sand driving where after a few kms of great performance through dunes we suddenly reverted to 2WD on the beach, below the high tide mark. Dug ourselves out and after 5-10 mins 4WD restored but again after a few mins back to 2WD again, and again, until we eventually dug/drove ourselves out!
I concluded the Haldex system had overheated and from what I understand of it there is a temp sensor on the oil which disengages the clutch above 100 deg C.
Anyone familiar with this? Any aftermarket fixes to manually lock into say a 50/50 front/rear split? I believe Haldex have new controllers but seems it is all about pre-emptive response, presumably still relying on oil system and still prone to overheating.
Look forward to your bright ideas.
