XC90 ICM module repair/replacement question
I bought a salvaged one from eBay seller volvopartsonly for $247 plus $12 shipping. I installed it myself today, and it is working like a champ!
This is part of a larger saga that I am describing in a separate thread.
If you want to go the used route, be careful to get the right one. There are at least two varieties of ICM. Mine was the so-called matrix display that works with the premium sound. Also, the installation is fairly straight forward but there are a couple of tricks. Let me know if you need advice.
At least in my case, no programming was needed--plug and play.

Hi,
I have bought a replacement ICM module (matrix) what my old one was as well.
it was easy to remove the unit and get the new hardeware in, but once installed, the screen is still blank. no matter, which button I push, nothing happens.
the stickers on the old and the new ICM modules have different numbers on it. see the attached old and new pictures.
any idea, how I can proceed with the new unit to get it working?
your help is very much appreciated.
thank you.

Well after many attempts at a quick and inexpensive repair I took the XC90 to the dealer for an official diagnosis. They went through many of the same things I had already done and told me the ICM needed to be replaced. The cost... $1,300 USD.
I took to the Interwebs to find a better way. Forum posts and eBay took me to VolvoPartsOnly. They have used ICMs for various amounts (most between $250 and $300 USD). I ordered one post haste. When it arrived I plugged it in and got nothing. No audio, no lights, nada. I took it to the dealer for a software flash hoping that would bring it to life... nothing. Dealer said the ICM was not recognized because it did not match my VIN.
The dealer did call Volvo USA and got me the four part numbers that will work in my XC90. I called Patrick at VolvoPartsOnly and he gladly swapped the ICM I bought with one that matched one of the Part Numbers I got from the dealer. In fact, he gave me the exact part number I pulled from my SUV. It was plug and play and I now have a screen and operational ICM for 1/4 of the cost. Patrick even sent me a pre paid shipping label to return the other ICM that didn't work.
Not a big fan of a $300 fix for old equipment that still doesn't have the nice features of a modern unit (aux input, SAT, HD Radio, etc) but I sure like the price better than $1,300 from the dealer. I may have the software flashed to match my vehicle for $93 just to be safe. Glad to have a working ICM and hope to get some trouble free miles out of this one.

You'll need a part number that matches your original or one that will work with your VIN. I had an origianl PN30679179 and can supply you with the corresponding part numbers the dealer got from Volvo if you would like. Unfortunately none match the other number shown in your pics.

The part number is found on the back of the Radio Display unit. It will require removal of the unit. In all honesty, removing the unit is fairly easy. I have done it in less than 5 minutes once I knew what to do. Not a lot involved, just some basic steps.

I also bought a icm which was exact same model number off ebay from a real good seller I put it in my car and it still only displays the premium sound message on the screen for about 5 seconds and then goes out like my original one does did you ever figure yours out and get it to work I'm thinking maybe the amp or the radio receiver in the rear of car is no good

would be keen to know what you did, thanks

I know this is a long time since orig post, but our 2005 volvo xc90 radio and back up sensor failed, after having our shocks and struts replaced. Prior to that no issues, could be coincidental, or could have been initiated by shop repair, doesn't matter. Shop disclaiming any liability. Now we need a new ICM. Seems like they are running between $900 and 1200 new. Found a place online that repairs your ICM for $375, thus avoiding a trip to dealer for reprogramming. Has anyone gone this route, and was it successful? The place is called Hi Tech in Van Nuys, CA. FYI, the computer has not been updated probably since 2010. Reno, NV dealer quotes cost just to update computer to be $2000! (that would not be including reprogramming for new ICM. Would appreciate any advice/suggestions.
