Default XC90 trade in

I have a 2004 XC90 T6 with 170,000 miles and a transmission problem. The car is in good condition, other than the transmission which might need to be replaced. I have the "transmission service urgent" message. The engine runs fine, and everything else is fine too. Its pretty loaded, its got navigation system, DVD system, leather interior with wood trimming, and 3rd row seats. No cosmetic damage other than a couple little scratches witch are not noticeable. It has snow tires on right now, but I also have the road tires. I checked the kelly blue book value and it came out to be around $7000-$8000 in "fair" condition. I just don't know how much it would be worth considering it has a transmission problem. Any insight would be appreciated, thanks.

kbb is a ridiculously optimistic guide. NADA current auction prices are closer like these numbers

01/20/11 NORTHWY Regular $6,925 133,920 Below Green 6CY A Yes
01/19/11 MINNEAP Regular $6,300 155,287 Below BEIGE 6GT A Yes
01/06/11 DET METR Regular $6,400 160,074 Below BLUE 6GT A Yes
01/20/11 FRDKBURG Regular $5,600 176,637 Below SILVER 6G A Yes
01/20/11 MANHEIM Regular $4,300 198,012 Below BLUE 6G Yes

try deducting another $3000 from that since your have that pretty message on the dash. Nav doesnt matter since its over 7 years old, a garmin for $99 would probably be faster and more current maping than that one. dvd is now on the way out since streaming video is becoming more popular. clear the code and trade her in.

you have a $2000-2500 car right now with a dying trans. when mine goes hopefully at 220k, i'd let her go for scrape if i had to. :/

Where are you getting these NADA auction prices??
I just got my 2006 V8 (optioned out) 92,000 for $12,200. I guess I overpaid a bit. Oh well. I guess when you think about it the auction prices are to dealers...Right?

I wouldn't feel bad at all getting an XC90 for that price. To the op, check the common websites like craigslist, autotrader and cars.com and get a feel for what things are going for, then decide if it's worth fixing or trading or giving the next guy a deal. I would try and sell it private party before letting a dealer have it for just a couple thousand. You might find the guy who knows how to swap out the tranny and you both make out better. KBB, NADA and Edmunds are just guides, not the Bible, take them with a grain of salt. Best of luck, let is know how it works out.

my prices are current sales at NADA auctions accross the use. This give a really current snapshot of what the car is worth today. Use these numbers as a guide and bottom line scenraio. Like someone else said, craigslist it for more and see what someone else can do with it. Cut the bleeder while you can! The more it breaks and become not driveable, the less it is worth.

scenario

2004 t6 awd loaded like yours with 112k busted trans. asking $4000, actually sold for $2800, car was refurbed and serviced and retailed for $12000. unfortunatly yours cant command such a price because mileage scares 99.9% of the people out there.

Sure, I guess I could "cut the bleeder" or I could just drive it and enjoy.

It's all part of owning a car, isn't it???

we talking about a 170k t6 with a failing trans that is not going to be worth much if the trans does blow up. will it make econimical sense to reinvest another $3-5k back into it? its all depends if the car is worth it and only the OP knows the real truth, we all offering opinions.

cutting the bleeder? your car is not the one with a bad trans! btw- your 06 with 92k for $12k is a good deal. i see those go for $11k and more, this one went for

01/18/11 DETROIT Regular $12,050 90,309 Below DK BLUE 8G A Yes

the other cars were the infamous T6 cars, they go for cheap at auction nothing compared to your v8 car
