Default considering cross country's

I'm condering getting a cross country 1st generation 98-00.I've been thinking about getting one for a while.I'm currently in college in the northeast,so I need something with all wheel drive.I've heard of some problems, but I figured asking on a volvo site would be the best place. How reliable is a cross country typically? Are there any common issue's with them? How expensive are part's to replace? Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Main problem that I have heard of is the transfer box for the 4 wheel drive. Lots of problems with them until 2004 when volvo switched to a helix box. You will often find a 4x4 with the box disconnected and just driving on 2 wheel drive due to the expense of repairing the unit. The main reason why I didnt buy a v70 4x4, (can't afford a 2004 model yet :-(. We live up in the north of sweden (lat 64) so probably have the same sort of weather as you do and I need a 4x4 for hunting, use an ancient land Rover discovery for hunting and the really bad weather. As for the rest of the car as far as I know they are similar to the normal V70 so brilliant engine (least ways the diesel is) comfortable car and a joy to drive.

As an old friend of mine said, 4x4 is for those that don't know how to drive a 2 wheel drive car.
