Exclamation 2004 V&0 R Wagon Fuel System Gremlin

As noted above I am having a problem w/my V70 R AWD Wagon's fuels system. it started cutting out and seemingly 'fouling'. In board HUM stated fuel system and fuel pump, replaced. Lasted less than 1/month. Followed up again w/same code and just replaced fuel pump, yeah!!! Or so I thought. Lasted a couple of days around town w/o issues. Wen on an out of town trip, brief, 50 miles and it started up again, engine fluttering and then eventually stalling. Codes,, said fuels system ,pressure in fuel lines, cylinders firing or not. You name it...When the car would start to flutter and stall, if I turned it off for 30 seconds or so and started it back up it would run normal for an indeterminate period then start the stalling game again.

Parked it in driveway for the moment as there are no Volvo mechanics down in this area of New Mexico. Turned it on to idle yesterday to maintain battery and it ran for 15-20 minutes before I could hear the engine starting its dance again... So great wizards, what is going on here?!?!?!

Default My suggestion.

With all of your information I would suspect the crank position sensor at this point.

Early stages of crank position sensor failure on most vehicles = random overheat fail, cool down function cycle, eventually leading to total failure = no signal to ignition or fuel pump.

This video makes it clear how fast and easy the job is, even though the sensor shown is an older corded type = location + remove / install is the same.

I think this is your sensor.

I am going through similar issues now on my 2003 Volvo V70 base wagon 2.4l.

285,345 miles on the car, 90% interstate highway.

Intermittent shutdown for the last 17 months.

The first time was assumed to be a six year old battery.

Nine more intermittent shutdown, until magic #10, and it has not run in three months.

Initial diagnosis: No pressure in fuel rail, pump not running.

Due to miles and vehicle age I assumed the pump was bad.

With my current health issues it has not been a priority.

In the past three weeks a friend has replaced:

Fuel pump.

No signal from CEM to fuel pump.

Dropped CEM under driver dash, no sign of corrosion or water intrusion.

Inspected / tested all related relays, shunts, fuses, and re-seated them.

No signal from CEM to fuel pump.

Fuel pump relay.

No signal from CEM to fuel pump.

Cam position sensor.

No signal from CEM to fuel pump.

Saturday April - 8 2023 the crank position sensor will be replaced.

If that fails, I will invest in the Volvo VIDA DICE OBDII Diagnostic Scan Tool.

So my issue is that it will begin 'fluttering' ands I will get a a variety of codes, most addressing the fuel system. Fuel cap not secured, this cylinder or that misfiring (rare), fuel system vacuum leak. To date have replaced the fuel pump and the fuel filter. Vehicle will turn on and run fr variable periods of time before it begins feeling like it is not firing on all cylinders and/or failing to keep running bc of fuel shortage. For a brief period worked better when tank was kept above half full. Not it seems to be unrelated. When car fails, I can turn of for 20 or so seconds and it will fire back up and run for an indeterminate period before it starts all over again...

Have you looked at the fuel pump control module? = PEM.
