At A Loss - Many Issues (Electrical/Computer) - '04 V70 FWD NA
I have an '04 V70 NA FWD with 207k. I've been having so many issues lately, but mechanically it runs fantastic.
I have some codes stored, I'll have to lookup the list I have for them all, but only "Engine System Service Required" stays and that is because the gas pedal has lost its connection to the high speed network. No issue with it impacting driveability.
Three days ago, I get the "Anti-Skid Service Required", then "Brake System Failure Stop Safely" and then the temp gauge, and tachometer stop working. Then "ABS" and "BRAKE" lights light up shortly after and the speedometer stops working. After this, if I shut off the car it will will start but shuts down after about 5 seconds. This has happened twice. The first time it magically went away. The second time I immediately turned around and called my mechanic.
When he plugged in his computer, the ECM was just simply not there, all other modules reported. He checked all connections and those were good. He literally shook the ECM box and all of a sudden the ECM is online again. The aforementioned codes went away and it was able to run again.
Fast forward to several hours later, I come home and give it a try and immediately the temperature gauge spikes to the max and it says "High Engine Temp See Manual" It then also throws code P0600.
I don't even know where to begin. My mechanic says to find a specialist as its beyond his specialty.
I do still have an '01 NA FWD that can serve as a donor for parts, but I'm half tempted to throw this engine and trans in it. I didn't have any electrical issues with that, just a blown head-gasket.

When you said, "He literally shook the ECM box and all of a sudden the ECM is online again. The aforementioned codes went away and it was able to run again", I thought of the ECM boxes which had moisture incursion from that era. Go in and check for evidence of water and pin corrosion.
Also, if your DIM does not have silver rings around the gauges (meaning old style) I'd suspect the bad solder problems. Did the '04's get the new DIMs or oldies?
How cavalierly you can swap big parts among these cars is questionable. Many of the parts are coded/married to the original car.

Maybe a common problem on the 2004's.
Trying to get to the bottom of my "mystery" problems... CEM failure in with heat...

Silver rings on the gauges georgeandkira. I'm having it looked at by a Volvo specialist now, though I doubt anything significant comes of it. I really do love these cars, but it seems hit or miss with the electronics. I drive 40k/year for work and reliability is a must, mechanically its great though.
You may be right about the heat firebirdparts, I seem to recall a fan warning listed out and it was 95+ degrees out when it happened, both times, though I think the large bump had a lot to do with it the second time. The first time was when I was in a subdivision driving to my daughters graduation and I noticed it when the tach went dead.
I'm thinking about striking up a deal with a dealer and trading them both in... We'll see if they offer anything fair. Getting the itch to get a 4Runner again. I've had two prior to the Volvo's.
