Bad fuel gauge, '12 XC70 3.0T
I was given a '12 XC70 with 150k miles and the only real concern I want to fix is the fuel gauge does not read accurately. You can fill the tank and it might look correct but twenty minutes later, its reading half full on the little bar gauge on the instrument cluster. If you select the miles to empty message on the instrument cluster, it can count down, but also count UP! So if you had this problem, how would you go about fixing it? I know there is not an access port under the rear seat/trunk. I already have the tank removed from the car. On the tank, I can see the port to open and access the pump assembly and I can also see the fuel pump module bolted to the top of the unit. I'm guessing at the very least, I need to open up and pull the pump which probably has the level sender on it. Will a new fuel pump assembly fix this problem or do I need to also replace the fuel pump module? The car runs fine, so its not a duel delivery problem, its just the gauge isn't displaying the correct fuel level or miles to empty. Thanks.
Jason,
If you end up opening the fuel tanks, the linked youtube video will provide good info on tools and what to expect inside.
I would suggest confirming the cause is inside the tank first. I once spent an entire day replacing a fuel pump from a Toyota Celica and later discovered the real cause to the problem was a blown fuse.
Good luck.

Jason:
My 2004 XC70 left me on the side of a busy highway with a sudden sputter of the engine and eventual shutdown. No engine codes were tripped.
My local non-Volvo mechanic spent hours before he checked the tank.... Empty!
He said the fuel level sending unit failed. He claims there are 2 parts he had to replace at $800 each (from Volvo). Ouch!
I can't prove any of this, but he fixed it, so I paid and got back on the road.
Of note: I was also experiencing dash unit (DIM-DriverInstrumentModule) failures in other ways, but I never suspected the fuel level was a lie. But, It was.
Eventually, I had the display unit resoldered by a mail exchange outfit. (Did I really need the new fuel level sending units? Who knows?)
All I can offer is my anectdotal remarks of a similar experience.

Great video. Thanks. My tank is different. It only has one true port into it. This video shows two ports into the tank. I'll look at fuses too. Good idea. --update -- I just checked and no fuel related fuses or instrument panel fuses were blown.

rjrentler,
Do you remember who you sent your instrument cluster to for repair? While I don't suspect that is my issue, because other than the improper reading/display of fuel level, my instrument cluster works fine.

For DIM repair, I used...
https://circuitboardmedics.com/volvo/
The problem was driving the car without a DISPLAY while the part was being repaired and mailed back to me. (Less than a week.)
Caused a SAFETY system fault that could only be cleared with certain OBD2 devices.
They repaired and returned the original, so mileage is true.
I recently noticed, they do not post prices for 2004 XC70 anymore. Gotta call them for quote.
