Trying to diagnose daughter's car from afar. She could drive fine, but when she stopped, she could not put car into park or turn the key too the off position. When she tried to put the shifter in park, it sounded like an old fashioned gear grinding (I could hear it over the phone). She was able to drive this way, but the headlights were also out. Dash and hazards still worked. We tried the manual shift lock override in the console under the shift lever, and after fiddling with that, she was able to push the lever to park (it still made the grinding noise) and then the motor immediately stopped, even though the key was in the "on" position. The car is off, but the key is still in the on position, and it will not move. The gear shift now moves freely. Any ideas where to start?
