The tailgate on my 2001 XC70 will not latch 95% of the time, so at any time you can just lift it open without using the handle/release. If I fool with it long enough by pushing the lock/unlock buttons on the fob and by manually messing with the lock mechanism I can get it to latch......sometimes. Any advice out there?

 

Please note, that I am not privy to the XC70s so my advice is general-kind of.

I would check the alignment/unusual wear of the strike for the latch. I would also check the condition of the linkage/cable to make sure they're within spec and nothing is preventing the latch to operate.
