Default 2003 S60 problem with ignition locking

Ignition is locked despite all attempts to gently depress break and depress key while trying to start. Could not engage starter. Cannot get the car out of park. There have been no other problems. Any idea?
Frustrated.

It could be that the alarm had been triggered disabling the ignition, in which case unlock the car again and all should be good. Or else, is the steering wheel locked? I know in other cars I've owned (hondas, maxima, toyota) I wasn't able to get the key over to the start position if the wheel lock mechanism had set. If that is the case just put your key in the ignition and rotate the wheel in either direction. You should be able to start it then. These are the only two possibilities I can think of.

If the key won't turn at all then the lock cylinder is bad.
