Default '94 940 stalled

Hello! I am new here- so I'm sorry if this isn't in the right place.
We've been having some stalling problems with our Volvo. It's had tons of work done over the years, and it's always been taken to the local Volvo Dealership. We try to keep it in the best shape possible. We are a few months (4 or 5 months) behind this year's tune up, though.

Today my husband was driving it and it stalled in the middle of the road. A guy pulled over to help, and said he works at Pep Boys. He said it was the battery. The battery is almost a year old. We live in Florida, and his explanation was that batteries don't last over a year in Fla. I have heard that they last up to 3 years from other sources.
Is it possible for a battery to just die in the middle of operation? Would that cause the car to stall? We had battery problems in the past- but just to where the car would not start. We've tossed around the idea of the alternator as well.

Thank you all for your help!!!

I apologize, I read read a post from jcraig0433 back in April, and it sounded kind of like what just happened, except he mentions a black box.
He was recommended to have the alternator checked. Should we do this?

Well, we have the car fixed now. We had an AWFUL experience at Pepboys- I do not recommend anyone go there, unless you enjoy being taken for a ride (and not in a Volvo 1800!). We had to tow the car there because it was late at night, and our Volvo repair place doesn't let you drop the car off. In the future, I will just deal with paying a tow truck twice- once to the house, another to the shop.
It turned out to be the Engine Control Module. The part was only $180- unfortunately it wasn't a Volvo part, so I bet we'll be replacing it again much sooner than we would a Volvo liscensed part. However, the car is running better than it had in the last 2 years.
SO if anyone is having this problem- please have this checked out. It seems the "brain" of the car is important after all!

Thanks for the update. I have had a Volvo stall while driving with a weak battery. The ECU is also an important part of running.
