960 dies when using ac
Giday I hope somebody can help me I have a great 960 low ks 130000 but it sometimes stops complety while using the ac I have to pull over turn of the ac and the key before it will re start.it then runs ok maby for a couple of houhs ac on or not. Any ideas ?
No Idon,t get any noises it seem's to be computer related because if I don't turn the key all the way off before re starting it some times starts but sound's like its running on two cyclinders. But start's and runs ok after turning the key all the way off.
Everything on this car is like new the ignition switch is fine. This only happens when using the air con also the ac turns off when the car is under load (eg climbing hills or overtaking) is this normal
The A/C cutting out when climbing a hill or taking over is probably normal; it is probably cut when the gas pedal is floored due to a part of kick down function. This is a feature on the 850s but not sure on the 960s.
Tech is off for a bit, so I can only suggest that the idle boost control is not functioning when the A/C is turned on. The idle speed has to compensate for the compressor load and if there is a malfunction in the control system, the engine dies. I am not sure if this is the case on the 960s but this is the cause in general.

Try doing this to see if the idle motor is working.
I never really tried this on the 960 but I know it works on all the 4 cylinders.
Start the car and let the idle settle down. Put the car in reverse and see where the idle goes to. It should drop for a second then go back to the normal idle speed.
Then switch back to park. The idle should raise for a second the drop back ot normal idle speed.

Thanks for all the info guy's it has helped a lot I have just got back from a 3hr drive across Melbourne it died once on a freeway and once pulling away from lights it's 37deg celsius(96.6 fahrenheit) here today. I have had Volvo's since 1979 and have never had any troubles until this one . But the 960 is still the best one I have had, even better than the 1982 245 (estate) which I got brand new. I think its off to the volvo repair shop this week with the info I have from you guy's we should be able to sort it out. I'll tell you the outcome if and when I get it.
