Coil pack and plugs? Or other?

Unhappy Coil pack and plugs? Or other?

2012 s60 t5 2wd 85k mild oil burning issue.

yesterday my wife was driving at highway speed, when all of a sudden she lost power and had vibration ant any speed. She limp the car to closes exit (15 miles) and towed it home (120 miles). When she got her (snowing and 13 degrees) I drove it off tow truck and inside.

it sounds like miss fire to untrained ear... did not sound like a knock or rod noise.

oil level and color was good, coolant level was good.

I am planning to pickup 5 coil packs and 5 plugs at Napa or other store and start there.

I have no code reader, but my guess is that this is the case.

other options are greatly appreciated.

misfires can be caused by many things. A code reader is a basic tool for the DIYers - I found my $39 Harbor Freight works fine for most OBDII powertrain codes or you can rent/borrow a reader from many of the big box autoparts stores. Not sure of the intervals for a '12 but generally plugs should be changed at 75K, coils go 100K+. You can do a visual for vacuum lines and related intake air leaks. I'd also suspect fuel issues or wet wiring due to the snow but without any codes, its guesswork. You may want to inspect the air filter box and consider cleaning the MAF and throttle body with some CRC MAF cleaner.

Got a code reader, miss fire 3 and 5. Replaced all 5 spark plugs and coils, still have the same issue.

Code reader miss fire 3 and 5.

next would be to check for intake air leaks/vacuum leaks and clean the MAF and throttle body. Did the codes reappear immediately after you cleared them or after about 50 miles or so?

It was instantly on start up.

the odds part of the issues was it started at speed, cold environment. So makes me think electronic failure of a part. And was not a slow starting progressive issue.

I disconnected the mass air flow sensor and it made no difference... same poor running... rich gas smell.

does that make anyone think that the issue is related to this?

I am now getting error codes that point to throttle control issues.
New code p2111
New code p0638 Along with the same miss fire 3 and 5.

After some looking on the web... I realizedthat I disconnected the throttle control just past the air filter and not mass air flow sensor.

again, I am sure that is the reason for the code, but, should I suspect that the issue did not change with that unplugged?

I do not want to pay volvo... but might have to.

I will pull both of these now that I know that the mass air flow sensor is at the end of the tube that I had to pull to get to plugs and coils.. and the throttle control is the other...
