Cold Start problems
I have a 1989 740 it has a very difficult time starting in the morning or anytime it sits for more than a couple hours. It is harder to start the colder it is. Also my mileage is in the the toilet! Any suggestions?

Possibly problems with vacuum leaks making it hard to start.
But the most likely cause of the starting problem is the Cold Start Valve.
Have someone pull the codes to see what they point to.
We do sell the Cold Start Valve on our website. Part number is 3517130.
The mileage problem may bey caused by the Air Mass Meter.
It may need to be cleaned. Ask your local parts store for a cleaner
that is safe to use for Air Mass Meters.
Also, you may need to replace plugs and plug wires.

If you have a mechanic, refer him to Volvo TSB 31347/1. There is a known issue with the cold start injector/valve running too long, flooding the engine. The number one culprit for poor mileage is a bad O2 sensor. Replacing the cold start injector without the recommended patch by Volvo will not fix your issue. If you decide you do need a cold start valve, I have a known good one for sale.
